Across the city, Mumbaikers are anticipating the onset of monsoon after the heat of April and May. With monsoon comes the start of school, as teachers get ready, families return from long journeys to their natal villages, and children queue up to buy uniforms, books and all their back-to-school essentials.
ALF starts next Monday, and the teaching team has been busy planning a new improved Leadership curriculum for our 8th and 10th standard classes. We’ve also been updating our lesson plans for academic subjects, and we’re introducing a new subject, Applied Maths, in addition to regular SSC Maths, which sadly has few real life applications.
Friends Library had to move out of its original space in Dharavi, and this has turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as our new space is brighter, and even a little bigger. There is a little more space in the new lane, which we are glad about, because in the old place the lane was narrow and not really conducive to having hundreds of children run up and down it on library days.
The library is still accessed by a rather precipitous staircase, offering quite a full body workout to young readers…
Two of the Friends library founders, Sweety P and Monisha, were back from their villages and able to move the Friends Library books, shelves, mats and (importantly) ceiling fan, with the help of ALF teachers. On perhaps the most humid day of the year, this was a tough job, but we managed to move everything through the small lanes. We’re excited to see what will happen with Friends Library this year.
